Insurance Claims for Storm Damage

If you have suffered damage to your roof from a recent storm, you will need to file a claim with your homeowners insurance company to receive funds for repairs or replacement. First, you will want to be sure there are no immediate hazards associated with the damage, such as fallen trees or downed electrical lines.

Steps to File Roof Damage Claim

Once you have established that the surroundings are safe, take the following steps to file an insurance claim:

1. Inspect the Damage

Take photographs of any damage that has occurred to your roof, siding, windows, downspouts, etc. You can also hire a professional local roofer to perform a formal inspection and that you can submit to your insurance company. Many roofers offer inspections free of charge with the hopes you will use them for any needed repairs.

Watch Out for Storm Chasers!

Following a big storm, commercial roofing companies send out sales reps in masse to try and recruit quick projects. You will want to avoid signing any contracts with these storm chasers, no matter how enticing their offers may be.

2. Review Your Policy

You will want to thoroughly review your insurance policy to see what is and what is not covered. Certain types of damage may be excluded from your specific plan, such as:

  • Damage due to neglect or lack of routine maintenance
  • Damage that falls under a previous policy
  • Damage due to manufacturer defect

3. Call Your Insurance

When you have thoroughly assessed the damage and/or obtained a roof inspection, call your insurance company as soon as possible. You have 365 days from the date of damage to file your claim, but the sooner you file, the sooner you can begin making repairs.

Your insurance company will assign you an adjuster who will work with you to:

  • Determine what is covered
  • Determine what repairs are needed
  • Determine if the damage is partial or complete (meaning a full replacement is needed)
  • Obtain estimates for the cost of repairs or replacement
  • Help you file necessary documentation, such as receipts, photographs, and contractor information

In some cases, your adjuster may have suggestions for local contractors to make repairs. In other cases, you can choose whom you would like to work with and submit their contact information to your insurance.

4. Wait for Instructions and Payment

Once you have officially filed your claim, your adjuster will keep you informed of anything he or she needs from you in order to continue processing the claim. Provided all documentation has been received and the damages are covered under your policy, you should receive a check for the cost of repairs minus your deductible.

What If My Insurance Claim Was Denied?

There are several legitimate reasons why a roofing claim may be denied. However, if you have filed your claim in a timely manner, submitted all requested paperwork, and have a policy that clearly states your type of damage is covered, you should not have to fight for a settlement. If your claim was denied unfairly, you have the option to appeal and may wish to consult with a qualified insurance attorney.

David Roth has helped hundreds of clients in Colorado deal with insurance claims. He holds companies accountable for unfairly denied claims, low-ball settlements, and unjustly drawn-out processing times. Give our office a call or go online to schedule your free consultation today.
